Ethernet is increasingly becoming an important network in industrial applications. In terms of motion control, Ethernet, Fieldbus, and other technologies have traditionally been competing to obtain processing power for some of the most demanding workloads in industrial control systems. Motion control applications require determinism (guaranteeing that the network can deliver workloads to predetermined nodes in a timely manner), which is necessary to ensure location retention. Also, this will ensure precise stopping of the drive, proper acceleration/deceleration, and other tasks.

Standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet has never met this requirement. Even though the full-duplex switching and isolation collision domain eliminates the outdated CSMA/CD data link layer, it lacks predictability. In addition, the high complexity of TCP/IP in a typical stack is not optimized for reliable delivery of real-time traffic. Therefore, Fieldbus and PC control architectures with ASIC-based PCI cards have been common motion control solutions.

Ethernet solutions from EtherNet/IP® to EtherCAT® overcome these shortcomings in a unique way. Although Industrial Ethernet has some other advantages over other alternative technologies, it is far from dominant in motion control. But it will be a more competitive role in the next few years.
